Two recent events have influenced the development of the Hybrid III 10 year old crash dummy. In May of 2000, NHTSA issued its final rulemaking for the upgrade to FMVSS208. One option of the regulation requires the passenger airbag to be deactivated if a child representing a typical six year old or smaller occupies the front seat, while the airbag must be activated for a small female or larger. This leaves the population of children that fall between a six year old and a small female who could be exposed to an inflating airbag. The Hybrid III 10 year old is designed to represent this population for airbag OOP (Out of Position) testing to evaluate the potential for injury from deploying airbags for those crashes while the airbag is not deactivated. The dummy will be an important part of due care test matrices.

In June 2000, the SAE Hybrid Dummy Family Task Group provided specifications for the dummy and has since overseen the development of the 10 year old.

In November 2000, the Transportation Recall Enhancement Accountability and Documentation (TREAD) Act was signed into law in the United States, calling for the Secretary of Transport to initiate rulemaking for the purpose of improving the safety of child restraints. NHTSA is required to consider more comprehensive testing of child restraints, including booster seats and a 10 year old crash dummy of Hybrid III design.

NHTSA is to consider modifying FMVSS213 and must develop a new consumer information program for child restraints. The Hybrid III 10 year old is expected to be included in NHTSA rulemaking in the next year, under the provision of the TREAD Act.

Dummy Features

Head and Neck

The head is the same as the Hybrid III 5th Small Female. The skull is a two-piece aluminum casting with a removable vinyl skin certified to a head drop impact test. A triaxial accelerometer pack located at the head center of gravity enables the calculation of HIC. The neck is flexible, molded butyl rubber construction with a center cable. An adjustable lower neck bracket allows the head and neck to be positioned in the standing, seated erect, reclined and slouched postures. The neck is calibrated to flexion and extension moment/rotation corridors. Optional six-axis upper and lower neck load cells are available.

Upper Torso

A steel spine box supports six high-strength steel ribs bonded to polymer based damping material. A combined clavicle and scapula aluminum shoulder is sloped for improved shoulder belt routing. A urethane bib and aluminum/nylon sternum carry accelerometers for measurement of Viscous Criterion in OOP airbag testing. Vertical motion of the ribs is limited by rib guides. To measure chest deflection, the dummy is fitted with the rotary potentiometer and transducer arm as standard. Optionally, the thorax can be fitted with two IR-Traccs for high rate point-to-point deflection measurement. The IR-Traccs are fitted with rotary potentiometers at the pivot to measure lateral rotation. The upper torso is certified to thorax pendulum impact and lumbar flexion tests. The arms are vinyl skin over urethane foam with a welded steel skeleton. Optional shoulder load cells can directly measure applied belt loads.

Lower Torso

A cylindrical rubber lumbar spine with center cable mounts on an optional six-axis lumbar load cell. An adjustable lumbar bracket allows for 25 degrees of pre-positioning. The pelvis assembly is vinyl skin over urethane foam construction molded in a semi-slouched seated position. The pelvic bone is an aluminum casting with optional biaxial load cells on each ilium. A triaxial accelerometer pack mounts in the rear of the pelvis. The legs are vinyl skin over urethane foam molded over a welded steel skeleton.

Technical Specifications

All instrumentation is optional except for the chest deflection potentiometer. Three (3) optional tilt sensors in the head, chest and pelvis are available to measure Rx and Ry for pre-test positioning. The standard dummy is delivered with structural replacements for the load cells.
