ATD Harmonization Efforts To-date: Hybrid III Adult Family

June 19, 2011 - The ongoing monthly harmonization meetings sponsored by Humanetics Innovative Solutions have brought together some of the largest users of crash dummies in the world to discuss and recommend a consolidated brand of Anthropomorphic Test Device (ATD) for the most common varieties in use and regulation today. The group includes a broad range of organizations including those who manufacture, regulate and evaluate motor vehicles.

During the first five months of 2011, the group has deliberated on the Hybrid III 10YO Child, Hybrid III 95th Large Male, the Hybrid III 50th Male, and the Hybrid III 5th Small Female ATDs. The group’s efforts so far have focused mainly on the Hybrid III adult family, but will continue with reviews of the EuroSID-2 and child ATDs during the summer months of 2011.

On May 12th, 2011 worldwide members from the Japan Auto Manufacturers Association (JAMA), the European Auto Manufacturers Association (ACEA), the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and the U.S. auto manufacturers met in person at the Humanetics headquarters in Plymouth, Michigan to finalize the technical recommendations of the harmonized Hybrid III adult family. This gathering was the first worldwide face-to-face meeting of the task group since the first inception of the organization in late 2010. Previous monthly meetings were held with international members attending via web and voice conferencing. The face-to-face visit enhanced the committee’s focus and helped bring together the final proposals.

The task group’s in depth review of each brand of crash test dummy examined a wide variety of characteristics including component shape, conformance to specified drawing packages, performance history, worldwide populations, manufacturing efficiency, and molding capabilities. During the initial discovery phase of review, the analysis uncovered many more similarities between the brands than differences. Historically, each manufacturer has committed to producing the optimal performing ATD while conforming to the relevant specifications.

The technical reviews of the Hybrid III family of ATDs have also produced a harmonized vinyl and foam material that incorporates the best practices and features of the Denton and FTSS brands. The common vinyl material will utilize a light brown pigment that will set it apart from the flesh hues of the current Hybrid III family. The chemical and material composition has been optimized for the best performance while still meeting the requirements outlined in regulation.

The group has suggested the following matrix of harmonized ATD definitions

DN = Denton Brand
FT = FTSS Brand

The harmonization of the Hybrid III Adult Family marks the first release of recommendations provided by the task group and furnishes guidelines for the optimal test devices in conformance, manufacturability, and usability. The group’s suggestions do not provide for design changes nor offer legal or regulatory advice.

A timetable for the manufacture of the first harmonized dummies and the scheduling of product phase-in periods will be proposed and discussed during the next set of meetings beginning in June, 2011.

The Harmonization Task Group will also draft technical reports for the worldwide customer base outlining the basics of the harmonized dummies and the product choices available to them in the future.
