Anthropomorphic Test Device Training Seminars

Management Oriented

A half-day seminar offering an overview of existing Anthropomorphic Test Devices (ATD's), applications, and instrumentation.

Who Should Attend

This half-day seminar is oriented towards Department Managers and Purchasing Agents who are responsible for specifying or authorizing the purchase of automotive safety testing equipment.

What You Will Learn

This condensed course will give a biomechanics overview of the driving force behind ATD design and the evolution of this intricate test equipment. We will cover the various applications of these devices and the benefits of the information acquired from internal sensors in situations such as full-scale Barrier Crashes, Sled Testing, and ATD Calibration. The Society of Automotive Engineers is highly involved in establishing the need for new test devices and their design criteria. Government legislation mandates the performance of specific tests and the instrumentation required to perform specific measurements. Research and Development functions require the use of optional instrumentation. These topics and their relationships will be discussed.

Program Length

One half-day (5 hours) includes lunch and a tour of the Humanetics manufacturing and testing facilities.

How You Will Benefit

Upon completion of the seminar, you will have gained knowledge of:
  • How the dynamic response of the human body is simulated with mechanical components.
  • How ATD's have evolved into the intricate, yet durable devices that they are today.
  • Government mandated testing and the appropriate ATD and instrumentation required to fulfill these strict requirements.
  • Optional instrumentation available for Research and Development purposes.
  • ATD components which require occasional replacement due to use in safety testing
ATD Seminars were originally developed as highly technical and detailed courses for Engineers and Technicians performing Automotive Safety Testing. With the constant evolution of ATD'S, there is always more to learn about new mechanical developments and new sensors which offer more information to assist in designing a safer automobile. This condensed course gives the Department Manager or Purchasing Agent a good understanding of what is required to perform Government Compliance Testing, Certification (or Calibration), and what is optional for Research and Development. This course will provide the necessary background to make solid budgeting or purchasing decisions. Reference materials of course content are well-organized and remain the property of the participant for future use.

Test Technician Oriented

Five day seminars offering technical information on existing ATD's covering design characteristics, assembly, calibration, instrumentation and applications. These seminars include hands-on calibration training.

Who Should Attend

These five day seminars are oriented towards Test Technicians who are responsible for maintaining
calibrated dummies and setting up tests for added automotive safety components.

What You Will Learn

These seminars will outline the design details and improvements which have moved the mechanical system response another step closer to the human response corridors. Assembly procedures will be covered to assure that the dummies are properly prepared for data collection. Calibration techniques will be discussed and hands-on testing will be performed in the Humanetics Calibration Laboratory. Both standard (required) and optional instrumentation will be covered. Emphasis will be placed on calibration techniques and troubleshooting the dynamic response of dummy components.
