The CG dummies were the workhorses of military ejection seat testing in the 1960’s and early 1970’s. Their use continued into the 1990’s. They feature extremely rugged construction and ample capacity for on-board telemetry systems. They can provide whole body acceleration and angular rate information as well as windblast pressure. They have no compliance in the spinal column. A range of sizes was produced based on USAF, USN and JSDF anthropometry.
The original designs were designated the GARD dummies (Grumman Alderson Research Dummies) developed in New York and were modified by Humanetics, Inc. in California.
These dummies are used to test ejection seats in fighter aircraft. They are placed into the ejection seats in the cockpit section of the aircraft which is propelled by rocket sleds to aircraft operational speeds. The seats with the dummies are ejected to simulate actual operating conditions including the rocket powered ejection, man-seat separation, and parachute descent. Transducer readings on whole body acceleration and angular rate (pitch, roll, and yaw) are received by the onboard data acquisition system and transmitted to a range ground station. The data is used to analyze acceleration effects of the ejection on the occupant and performance of the ejection system and parachute.

Description & Construction
The heads are made of vinyl skin over aluminum skulls with removable caps and cap skins to give access for optional pressure transducers and linear accelerometers. One head size is used for all dummies as anthropometry was not determined to be great enough to require variation.
Each neck is a steel clevis bolted to the head with a transverse bolt fastening it to a drilled square tube welded to the torso. Very little motion occurs.
The shoulders consist of steel yokes fastened into the torso case and rotating around the lateral axis providing saggital plane rotation of the arms.
The arms are vinyl skin with urethane foam filling over steel bones. The hands are vinyl over steel bones.
The upper arms bolt to the shoulder yokes which provide the saggital plane rotation.
The lower arms bolt to the upper arms at an integral clevis providing forearm flexion in an inboard facing plane.
Single or double pin joints fasten the wrists and the hands depending on the model.
The torso is a welded steel structure which includes the neck bracket, the thorax, lumbar, abdomen and pelvis in one inflexible unit. The torso case of the larger dummies is oval at the lateral surface, the smaller ones rectangular. A platform in the torso case mounts the electronics package: telemetry, rate sensors, signal conditioners, battery and power conditioning. The torso cases are covered with canvas jackets having foam pads on their insides.
The legs are vinyl skin and urethane foam over steel bones. The upper legs fasten to the hip yokes where saggital and lateral plane rotation is provided. The lower legs flex at the knees and the feet have one pin joint at the ankle. The feet are vinyl skin over a steel bone.

Telemetry with signal conditioners and transmitter is mounted in the torso. An antenna may be mounted on the head with a modification. Transducer, data acquisition signal conditioners, wiring and telemetry part numbers and quantities, subject to quote. Additional channels may be used for seat transducers.
