EuroNCAP Test Protocol Update: Q Dummies

Starting from February 2013, the dynamic performance assessment of child restraints by EuroNCAP will be executed using two Q-dummies, the Q1.5 and the Q3, representing a 1½ and 3 year old child respectively. Both dummies will be placed in child seats recommended by the vehicle manufacturer and will be tested in frontal and side impact crash scenarios. Until dummies representing larger children are introduced, the dynamic assessment remains focused on head, neck and chest performance only.

Child occupant safety assessment has been carried out by EuroNCAP since its very first test to ensure that manufacturers take responsibility for the children travelling in their vehicles. In 2003, a child occupant protection rating was introduced to provide clear information for consumers about the results of these tests. The protocol used 1½ and 3 year old P-dummies.

The introduction of the Q-dummies (replacement of P-dummies), along with an installation check of a selection of popular, well-performing seats available in Europe, summarizes the main changes taking place in the EuroNCAP protocols of child safety assessment.

In order to support the development of restraint systems, Humanetics developed models for both dummies. More information can be found under: http://www.humaneticsatd.com/virtual-models/finite-element.
